Bosch Power Star model 45-557701

I had this model tankless water heater installed in my home in 2008. It was the Bosch Power Star model. Within two months it stopped heating water. Bosch replaced that heater under the warranty. I had to pay an electrician again to install it. In June of 2015 one of the two elements in that heater burned out. Bosch replaced that element (under warranty.) Again I had to pay electrician to install that part.

One month later that heater stopped working altogether. After some diagnostic testing with an electrician (that I once again had to pay) Bosch informed us that the motherboard to the unit had gone bad. That part was replaced under warranty. That part arrived in December of 2016. Once again I called & paid the electrician to install it. That day one of the elements in the heater exploded (destroying the unit completely and heavily damaging the bathroom along with it. It sounded as if an airplane had hit the house. I contacted Bosch looking for compensation. I was offered a new unit & nothing else. I now have a completely unusable bathroom.

Needless to say, I do not commend any model of Bosch tankless water heater.

12yrs and at least one circuit board later...
by: Peter

I've had the PowerStar 45 for 12 years now. It was the 2nd one; replaced because the 1st one (made by CEC) died after 4yrs. I too have had a bad motherboard. And I think I've replaced at least one heating element.

The unit has died again after 8yrs. The repair guy is on his way. I'm not sure what the solution is. The last circuit board was $150 8yrs ago. That's cheaper than a new tank...but still.
I'm expecting bad news.

Having problems after 7 or so years.
by: Anonymous

1st problem was water supply came loose. Luckily I was there and didn't flood the kitchen overnight.
2. turn on the faucet and it was like steam and a spray of hot water. Had to reset it.
3. #2 again.
4. Now having to reset every few weeks for some reason.
5. Today noticed temp has gone down noticeably and holding finger under water it would go from cold to warm to cold to warm. Thought I'd wait and see what part was failing and came looking for parts. Now after reading these posts maybe just get a new one.

Never again!
by: Steven E.

Had this same unit installed 5 years ago....have gone through FOUR circuit boards (paid for 3)and out of all that time, I may have gotten 2 good years out of the unit. Now it is out again, and just paid more money to find out the circuit board is burned out, AGAIN! Thanks to your post, I will now buy a whole new DIFFERENT BRAND unit instead of wasting money on another board and get rid of this piece of crap Bosch thing!

Exactly what I am experiencing
by: Anonymous

I have the same model. Water runs from ice cold to scalding hot in the same shower. Now it's not working at all. I know this is the 3rd one since the house was built 9 years ago. Not waiting for an explosion, going to get another kind. Thank you all for posting.

Bosch Power Star model 45-557701
by: Diane

I also bought this water heater in June 2011. Although I have never had any major repairs, after the first year, it didn't seem to hold heat evenly. It would get lukewarm off and on during a shower...like it was running out of hot water. Since I had never owned a tankless water heater before, I thought maybe this was normal. It's not like it gets a lot of use. I live alone, don't have a dishwasher and my washing machine is run on another hot water tank in another part of my house (not a tankless one).

Lately, the problem has gotten worse. A lot worse. It's not quite seven years old yet, but I think it should have lasted longer considering that I am the only person that is using it. If it is going out on me, I won't be buying another one like this. It's been a big disappointment.
